Suggested Books for Year 5
An amazing choice of books is available for this age group. Not all children will feel able to tackle these independently so like has been said on the previous year group pages, read together. Your enjoyment of the book is important to motivate your child to read further. Most children will be able to read for 30 minutes in a quiet, distraction free environment i.e. without the TV on. Again you asking them questions is vital to check their understanding of what they are reading.
If you feel these books are too hard for your child then the books from year 4 and 3 are still equally of value to them. It is essential that what they are reading is appropriately challenging i.e. they can read 95/100 words correctly. If they are getting too many words wrong then they will lose understanding and feel demotivated.
Please see you child's teacher for more advice if you need to.
